Cedar Key Sea Food Fest

ONE OF THE STATES GREATEST AND LEAST KNOWN ABOUT
Cedar Key Florida
Fly in to Cedar Key International Airport. (CDK) - 2355' x 100' and guess what - this airport is on a Island 2355' in diameter - guess what is on both ends of the runway - Water!! Watch out for No-Radios and traffic coming from all directions!! Sometimes there is a real strong crosswind - watch out for it on landing below the tree line!

If the weather seems bad - fog or light rain, as usually happens, file IFR. JAX center can follow you down to 2000'. Use your backup GPS to go over the island of CDK. Many times there will be fog or clouds 1500'-3000' over the mainland, but almost always over the island, there is usually an open hole that you can safely get down through. If not, file for an alternate of Lakeland or Tampa area!

Cedar Key has a NOAA unattended weather station (CDRF1) that you can monitor via Internet.

If you never flown to CDK, its a must. The last 22 miles of the flight is over very pretty blue water. The main island of Cedar Key is about 3/4 miles in diameter with a population of about 900. During the Festival the population grows to 40,000!! There is not a lot of parking space at the uncontrolled airport. If you park in the grass, watch out for small rocks, lots of soft sand etc. A taxi will pick you up and take you downtown - call him on the unicom on the way in! On downwind, leave room for the plane ahead of you to back-taxi on the runway!!

Ask the taxi driver where the best food is. I usually eat downtown in the restaurant back from the street ( Cooks Cafe) - the grouper sandwich is great. Remember to stop in the candy shop, Sweet Memories (352-543-6230), in the tourist area and tell John and Barbara The Irishman from the Civil Air Patrol sent you!! There home made fudge is great, try the Key Lime fudge!!

Family fun with the freshest seafood in the state served in the City Park, celebrating 1/2 century of SeaFood Festivals, Art & Craft Show 8am - 5 pm. Parade 11 am sunday, Music & entertainment, CDK Lions Club (352)-543-5600!!!

John's Pass Sea Food Festival

(over by Clearwater beach).

FLY to Clearwater Air Park (CLW) , no night operations -OR-
Specialized in Stone Crab Claws et al. John's Pass is just south of Clearwater Beach (west coast of Florida, west of Tampa). I've been going to this Sea Food Festival for 15 years. It can be really crowded, get there early, pay for parking close up - it's worth it.
This is one of those Sea Food Festival for those who live in Florida - the time of the year is just after it cools off from the summer and just before the snow-birds come down and plague our roads. Stone Crab Claws, if you have never had them, is the closest you can get to heaven without dying! They are one of the sweetest, tender, delicious Sea Foods on the face of the earth. Count on paying $8-$10 per pound, which only gets you 3-4 crab claws (1996 Claws $13/lb) - but they are worth it. If you like sharks, they usually have a really big one hanging up for a guess-the-weight. Again, see you there, get there early.
Madeira Beach. More than 100,000 people consuming tons of fish, shrimp, crabs and other seafood specialties at one of the state's largest seafood festivals. Entertainment plus arts and crafts are included. 813-391-7373.
Madeira Beach, Lyn Brauner (813)-398-5994. St. Pete Chamber .
Friday 6-10 pm, Sat 10 am - 6 pm, Sun 11 am - 6 pm.
1997 Report - Weather Great, Food Great, Lots of People, Parking a nightmare, No big Shark! No Stone Crab Claws, still worth going to!!!
