Annual Dive the Wrecks of Key Largo on - , Sunk 27-Nov-1987 , @ 1 mile south of Molasses light tower and about 1/4 mile from the Duane. She rests on her right side in 145 feet of water. There are boat tie-off’s on the bow, and the stern. The current can sometimes be treacherous (very very strong), requiring the dives to go up and down the tie off rope’s. While decompressing at 15-20’, it is not uncommon to hold onto the rope and have your bodies sideways from the current. It can sometimes force off your mask!
Eagle The Eagle is a 287 foot freighter - the former Aron K. She was sunk in Dec 1985 in 110 ft of water. She lay's on her side with the profile starting a at 70' to the bottom at 110'. There's two 70 ft by 20 ft open cargo holds. These are awsome to dive in - go in the holds and out the blast holes. The stern section is broken off and on an angle to the main section. All the parts are still on it's side. At mid ship, there's a bridge like structure that has a fun swim through (front to stern of the ship). The broken stern section has some interesting open areas. The stern also has some interesting swim areas such as the bridge area which is on a real wierd angle! As for fish life, there's one monster of a Jewfish , ( Computer Enhanced Pic ] - it's estimated to be 300 - 500 lb range! I've seen her and say it's on the 400 - 500 lb range. Some have called her a VW Bus under water. There's also lot's of big tarpon. I'd estimate there length at 5-6' and 150 lbs. I was able to get within 1 - 2 feet for picture taking! There not afraid of divers or camers. The Tarpon are swimming all around the wreck, mostly around the broken section 20 ft off the bottom. There was a large school of large spade fish also swimming around the broken section.
Duane Coast Guard Cutter - Duane. Sunk 27-Nov-1987, @ 1 mile south of Molasses light tower. She rests upright, faces southwest. The deck is at 100’ [ Just heard it's deeper than before, 5-16-06 ], the crow’s nest goes up to 50’. There are boat tie-off’s on the bow, crow’s nest and the stern. The current can sometimes be treacherous (very very strong), requiring the dives to go up and down the tie off rope’s. While decompressing at 15-20’, it is not uncommon to hold onto the rope and have your bodies sideways from the current. It can sometimes force off your mask! The prop can be seen at 120’ The intact vessels were prepared to accommodate divers. You can swim from one side to the other on some of the super-structure’s, you can see the exit when you enter.
Speigle Grove [ Note: This is an Old Report - the ship is diveagle ] The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is working on an emergency closure of the site while it assesses the ship's stability and its general condition. Workers will be removing the mooring buoys temporarily, sanctuary spokeswoman Cheva Heck said. The shifted position of the 510-foot ship comes as a surprise because the area experienced minimal tropical-storm force winds during the passage of Hurricane Dennis on Saturday. On Monday, a boat from Key Largo dive shop Ocean Divers visited the former Navy ship, which was scuttled in 130 feet of water May 17, 2002 . When divers arrived at the site six miles offshore, they saw that several mooring balls were missing.
