Dive Reports 13-June-2005

Dive #1: . My Dive #486
A. Dive Boat / Location: Narcosis Dive Charters / Juno Ledges
B. Conditions:
Visibility: 30 ft - not the greatest, but nice dive
Seas: 2 - 4 ft, no whitecaps
Water Temp: 76 deg (Capt Ray had said it would be 80 - I didn't see that )
Skies: Sunny, Clear Blue Sky's - Typial of Florida!!
Air Temp: high 80's
C. Dive Information:
Depth & Time: Me: Genesis Nitrox Dive Computer - 92 feet for 43 min.
Air consumption: Me: (120 cu ft), 3700 lbs to 700 lbs, 36 % NITROX, PO2 1.36
Current: Medium to strong to the north. You could hold onto the bottom, but it was difficult.
Description: Very pretty dive, saw continuous fish from the beginning to the end. At the beginning there were several Very Large Grouper under a ledge. When the rest of the dive group left, we waited. One big Grouper - est at least 10 ft long came out and started to head towards us. I motioned my DP to let's get outta here! Saw some small turtles [ 3 ft long ], green moray, lot's of fish, a few small sharks. One 4 ft nurse shark headed towards us with it's mouth open - I poked it with my tickle stick. A later review of the Reef Fish Book say this was probably a Cobia and not a shark. It didn't have all the features of a shark, did have a big mouth like a Nurse Shark, but no hanging down feelers.

Dive #2: . My Dive #487
A. Dive Boat / Location: Narcosis Dive Charters / Area 51 - Shark Alley
B. Conditions:
Visibility: 20 ft - poor!!
Seas: 3 - 5 ft but still no white caps
Water Temp: same, 76 - 78
Skies: Sunny, Clear Blue Sky's - Typial of Florida!!
Air Temp: high 80's
C. Dive Information:
Depth & Time: Me: Genesis Nitrox Dive Computer - 82 feet for 25 min. I was on NITROX, but my dive partner was trying out her new Steel 100's and had air so our bottom time was minimal.
Air consumption: Me: (120 cu ft), 3700 lbs to 1700 lbs, 36% NITROX, but plugged in as air bave PO2 of 0.76
Current: Very Strong to the north.
Description: Well we went in with the DM and 3 other divers and stayed together for a while. Vis wasn't that good and we soon found ourselves drifting along - Very Fast, buy ourselves. My DP was on air checking out her new Steel 100's. She's switched from Al 80's to Steel 100s and will take about 5 lbs off of her weight belt as it's now in the tank. The 100's are shorter and smaller in dia then the Al 80. And the difference in weight is probably about 6 lbs heaver [ ya take it off your weight belt ]. We tried to stay on top of the reef [ 65 ft ], but kept getting drawn down deeper by the very pretty ledges. The current on top was VERY FAST - close to 2 knots. I could not hold onto a rock to stay in place very long. In the end, we ran out of reef. The reef line on top turned East and the current was dragging us North and a little to the west. We had to kick a lot to the East just to stay on the edge. Twas a Rough Ride!
