Subject: Almost "dive report"

On Sat morning, Jerry Vasend, my daughter Samantha, and I got in Jerry's Cherokee 180 at Orlando Executive Airport and departed for Marathon in the Keys. Flight was pretty routine. There was a bit of a headwind so it took a little longer than we expected. Not that it mattered.

Seas were up to 6 feet. Boats didn't go out. Jerry didn't dive. Sam and I didn't snorkel. But we did play at the beach on Marathon. Samantha harvested lots of 6 year old beach goodies (shells, broken bits of coral, sponges).

Back in the plane. Headed north to Venice. Seems the airport is walking distance to the beach and fishing pier. That's the spot that is famous for all the shark's teeth in the water. Got to the water as the sun went down and the full moon came up. Gorgeous. Sam and I found two shark's teeth on the sand. At the base of the pier is Sharky's Restaurant. We put our name on the waiting list for a table. They give you a pager to call you back from the beach when your table is ready. Neat. Real nice atmosphere and food (seafood/steaks/chicken). After dinner. Back to the plane and a smooth flight back to Orlando. One short detour on the way back to circle Disney's Magic Kingdom at night.

So why did I send this non-dive report to a bunch of divers? I guess it is because I've learned to roll with the punches these past 30 years of diving. It is part of the game to make long trips and never get your gear wet. Most of us are into scuba because we love adventure. Most of have a lot of imagination too. So when your next trip is blown out, make the most of it. Find that beach, museum, nature trail, restuarant, etc. and live your life to the fullest. The critters, coral, and shipwrecks will still be there when you return on another day.
