Stuart / Jupiter - Loran Tower, 29-Dec-2001
Purpose:
To Dive the Reefs & Wrecks of Florida -
FOR LOBSTER!
Dive #1:

A. Dive Boat / Location:
It's-U-And-I
/ Lo-Dene
B. Conditions:
Visibility:
30 ft at best. Capt Bob said it was much better the day before! (It's always
better the day before)!
Seas:
Well, the
wind was a blowing from the SW at about at least 15 knots
. If you
were close to shore, you'd say that's great. But, 5 miles out, it kicked up
the waves to 3 to 4 feet. That's not too bad, except the wave period was very
close - it bounced the hell out of us. It was a very rough trip!
Water Temp:
72 - 74 on the bottom. And, believe it or not, it actually felt warm once you
were in.
Skies:
It was mostly cloudy with very high thin clouds to mask the sun and an
occasional sunshine. Not enought sun to brignten up the dive.
Air Temp:
70's (Brrrrr - it was cool, but remember this is the end of December)

Current:
Probably about a knot. The wind was pulling the boat to the NW and the current
pulling the divers to the north.
Description:
Well, we were hoping for 60 ft vis and didn't get it. And the combination of
the wind on the boat and the current kind of sucked also. But, the reef's here
are great. They are undisturbed Jupiter type ledges. These were 10 - 20 ft of
relief. There were a few less then normal number of tropicals. I did see at
least two turtles 4 ft long (shell size). And there were NO BUGS to be seen.
We came for BUGS - NO BUGS!! So, the dive turned out to be a look at the reef.
About half way throught the dive, Capt Bob picked up the anchor and we drifted
about 10 - 20 ft above the bottom. The wind carried the boat, the anchor line
pulled us. We stopped a few times for tropicals, but no bugs!
It was a pretty location, vis not the greatest, current not too bad by
itself, but with the wind conditions was ugh. Water temp felt warm, but that's
because the air was colder. Sure glad we don't get seasick.
Dive #2:

B. Conditions:
Visibility:
30 ft at best. Same as prevouse
Seas:
Getting rougher!!! More white caps, bigger and more frequent waves.
Water Temp:
72 - 74 on the bottom.
Skies:
It was mostly cloudy with very high thin clouds to mask the sun and an
occasional sunshine. Not enought sun to brignten up the dive.

Description:
Well, read the previous report, but the conditions were a little worst. A few
bugs were caught. Reefs were nice, but ocean was not the place for this 23
foot boat!
Dive #3:

/ Peck's Lake, not far from the Golden Arches
B. Conditions:
Visibility:
10 ft. That's not great, but seeing the water is only about 15 ft deep,
that's acceptable - if we get bugs.
Seas:
In close to shore, we had maybe 6 inch waves. There were still some whitecaps
from the SW wind. There also were lot's of boats out here!
Water Temp:
74 on the bottom. But, it was getting to feel very cold!
Skies:
Same

Current:
Probably about a knot with about a foot of surge. The surge is typical of
shallow water
Description:
Well, I only used a half of a tank because I was getting bored and cold. There
were some pretty ledges here going from 19 ft to 5 ft from the surface. Very
pretty ledges and swimthroughs. Lots and lots of sheeps head. Some other
fish. No bugs.
