Dive Trip Report to Vero Beach with the Down Under Dive Club (Palm Bay, Fl), Wednesday Morning, 1st day of mini-bug season Dive.
30-July, Vero Beach, Beach Dive for the 1st bug of bug season (Florida Lobster) a. Dive Location: Vero Beach, end of RT. 60, beach dive b. Conditions: Typical Florida Clear Blue Skies (CBS), calm seas and Clear Blue Water (CBW), @ 85 deg air temp. c. Dive Information: We entered the water around 6:15 am (up at 4 am, left house at 4:30am, met Mark at 5:00 am)! The water had 1-2’ waves, light surge, clear sky, sun just coming up - really pretty beach. About 100’ yards out we dove to the tremendous depths of 18’ - VIS was 5’ at first. By 8:00 am, vis was 1’. We did several small dives - total for me was 40 min, max depth 18’. I did shed my shortie wet suit and had on only a skin and gloves for protection from the many many spiny urchins. The water was cold at first but did warm up. No Bugs - could hardly see the reef! We left around 8:30 to go south to Ft. Pierce.

30-July, Ft. Pierce, Pepper Park, Beach Dive for the 1st bug of bug season (Florida Lobster) a. Dive Location: Pepper Park, beach dive - about a 100 yard walk from the car to the water edge with all your equipment on (100 lbs?). About another 100 yard swim to the outer reef for diving. b. Conditions: Typical Florida Clear Blue Skies (CBS), calm seas and Clear Blue Water (CBW), @ 85 deg air temp. c. Dive Information: 15’ for 45 minutes, vis 10’. The reef here is really pretty, there are almost swim throughs. Lots of urchins. No bugs. Really pretty park. I’d go back here in a heart beat if the vis was clear. All-in-all, almost 2 hrs under water, we saw one dead bug, my dive partner found a really really big - female! Of all the divers in the water, one person at Vero had one bug, and one person at Ft. Pierce had one bug! It was better than working, but it would have been nice to have had vis forever and lots of bugs and fish.
